Why I Would Get the Nikon 1 V3

image

I am staggered. And I will get one as soon as it hits the market.

That’s how impressive the new Nikon 1 V3 is to me

  • 18-MP sensor (vs 10-MP on Nikon 1 V1), possibility of cropping while maintaining enhanced image quality natively (been enjoying this with the Canon EOS M since day one)
  • Native high ISO image support via image overlay exposure – that, in my experience, should push useable ISO range up to 1600 on a one inch sensor (Nikon 1 V1 useable ISO limit is at 800). Anything more will be a bonus!
  • 120fps slow-motion HD 720p video capture puts a new dimension in my cinematic projects (400fps at 640×240 of Nikon 1 V1 is just not practical by any means)
  • MicroSD card slot – Wow! Game-changing that works with all my tablets. No more need of a SD card adapter!
  • Built-in flash that makes candid fill flash so much more convenient, while maintaining a small factor for the more casual shoot occasions!
  • Removable 2.36-MP EVF that gives me the option to go stealth on occasion where bulk is not appreciated nor forgivable (vs 1.44-MP of Nikon 1 V1). Published price include this accessory!
  • Awesome 2.7X telescopic reach liken to all Nikon 1 system
  • Detachable active grip that gives me better balance if the FT-1/F-mount combination is utilized (versus my passive grip for the Nikon 1 V1). Published price include this accessory!
  • 171 AF points! Not that Nikon 1 V1’s 135 AF points are shabby by any means.
  • 20 FPS for stills! This makes action photography a sleek genre to indulge in.
  • VR feature for movie capture with lenses that does not come with VR technology
  • Touch screen!

Above all, I do hope high-speed shutter release can now be achieved on Aperture priority mode, as compared to the older Nikon 1 V1 where it automatically switches to Program mode when high-speed shutter release is engaged.

Nikon 1 V3 Announced!

What originally attracted me to the Nikon 1 V1 when it was launched is her insane ability to capture stills at 60fps, built-in EVF and her 2.7x telescopic reach at 10-MP.

And remain so till today before the Nikon 1 V3 appeared. This newly designed form factor seems to be more inline with major players of CSC system, where a streamlined monoblock body is preferred. The newly-designed kit lens shines in her complementary role as liken to the kit lens of the Nikon Df.

Everything looks new on the outside with the exception of the yet-to-be verified image quality. I am pretty sure 14-bit NEFs is out of the question, making 12-bit RAW compressed images pretty much inferior to the newly announced Nikon D3300’s 24-MP LPF-less sensor, which will still cost much less.

With an EVF attached, I have yet to confirm if that makes the Nikon 1 V3 more intrusive. Hmm…a mixed bag indeed.

Nifty replacement to the Nikon 1 V1? Perhaps. Perhaps not.

Digging the rumor mill as I am eagerly awaiting to get my hands on some new gears for 2014, before heading back to China and then western Europe!

Looks to me like Nikon has opted for a detachable EVF this time round!

  • Completely new camera design
  • Very fast everything
  • 18MP sensor
  • External (probably optional) 2.4MP electronic viewfinder (EVF)
  • Eye sensor and a button to switch between LCD and EVF
  • 180° swivel LCD screen
  • New grip (also probably optional, not sure if it will have batteries)
  • New Nikkor 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 PD VR zoom lens
  • The official announcement will be in the next 1-2 months
